Making disciples – bearing fruit and growing

Making disciples – bearing fruit and growing

"All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth". (Col 1:6)

Dear Church,
The Lord wants us to hear this message clearly: the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is bearing fruit all over the world and advancing, and He wants us to join in His mission!
This was the message Paul joyously declared when he wrote to the church in Colossae. Today, the truth of this message continues to unfold before us.

The gospel is for everyone
“All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit". Paul was writing to a church made up of mainly Gentile believers. He was at the same time aware that there were many Jewish believers who have embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ, as the gospel was spreading through the then known world. Everywhere the gospel was preached, there was response – in certain cases rejection, and in certain cases welcome. The gospel message was not bound by geography, race, gender, nationality or politics. It was certainly not restricted to only a certain class of people. The gospel is good news to anyone who will receive it.

The gospel is powerful
This gospel is “bearing fruit and growing”. It is not just a catchy phrase. It’s about life change. It is about transformation that brings about right living before God. It is “the power of God for salvation” (Rom 1:16). It is the powerful Word of God that will not come back empty without accomplishing His purpose (Isa 55:11). The gospel is active and dynamic.

The gospel is about God’s grace
The Colossian believers were people who experienced the wonders of God’s amazing grace. They received the gospel message. It impacted them. Their lives had been changed when they received what God freely and graciously provided. This is grace. The gospel is the message of God’s gift to undeserving people. It is the good news of God’s grace.

The gospel must be shared
Epaphras faithfully shared the good news with the Colossians. In turn, the Colossian believers, as beneficiaries, had the responsibility to live out the gospel and relay the good news. It’s a sobering responsibility. But this is God’s way. He could have used another more effective way. But God chose to use people who have received His grace to tell others. Paul drew our attention to the fact that God has given us “the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5:18). We are ministers, servants, entrusted with the responsibility to tell people this good news that God’s grace is available.
God will cause the gospel to bear fruit and to advance. Amazingly, He invites us, people who have experienced His grace, to be involved in His mission. What a privilege! What an awesome responsibility!
Our Lord Jesus therefore gave this solemn charge to all His beloved disciples, to “go and make disciples” (Matt 28:18-20). This is the call to the church to be engaged in the Lord’s gospel work, the gospel in the full sense of the word.

Church, let’s hear the call to make disciples. That’s our Lord's design for the good news of the hope of restoration to be brought to the world.

In 2011:

Hear the message to Jonah, and understand God's heartbeat.

Hear the message to Joel, and take hold of the Lord's promise.

Hear the message to the Colossians, and have an appreciation of the gospel's transforming power.

YCKC, the Lord has placed us here to exhort one another, to be accountable to each other in the Body of Christ, to have opportunities to minister together. The mandate is clear, the task is great, the outcome will be glorious, for the Lord will accomplish His purpose. We have the privilege of involvement in the Lord’s mission, and will have the joy of seeing the gospel bearing fruit and growing.

May this new year be one that is fruitful, the result of disciples going out faithfully to “make disciples” as our Lord has so commissioned us.

The greatest gift you could ever receive

What is the greatest gift you could ever receive?

Every Christmas, shops are packed with people hunting for presents for family, friends and colleagues. And whether young or old, we all look forward to receiving gifts.

But year after year, we soon discover how hard it is to be truly satisfied. There's always something more that we wish we could have, and Christmas presents only satisfy us for a little while. Maybe we wish we could have a sense of peace. Maybe we're looking for a purpose in life. Maybe we're looking for forgiveness, but don't know where to find it. Maybe we want to change, but don't know how. Maybe we just want to be loved.

God knows our deepest needs, even more than we do. He loves us, even more than we could imagine. Because of that, He has offered us the greatest gift we could ever receive. He has offered us a good relationship with Him.

How? By taking away the barrier of sin -- all the evil, selfish things we have done or thought. How did He do that? He paid the penalty of sin for us, by coming to us as Jesus, and offering Himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus is the greatest gift God offers to us. Through Him, we can have peace, purpose, forgiveness, transformation and love. Through Him, we do not need to pay the price for our sins -- a price we could never truly pay through our own efforts. Because of his loving sacrifice, we do not need to face eternal punishment. Instead, we can have eternal life in heaven. God wants you to receive His greatest gift. You just have to acknowledge that you need Jesus.

Our 56th Anniversary - Looking forward

YCK Chapel celebrated its 56th anniversary on Sunday, 3 October 2010.

Even as we look back on God's guidance and blessings over the years, we look forward to fulfilling His desire for us as a church in the years to come.

As we look ahead, we hear these declarations of the Lord Jesus afresh:

· “I will build my church” (Matt 16:18). That is the Lord’s promise. We know that He has been building and we can be confident that He will continue building.

· “Love the Lord your God with all your heart …” (Matt 22:37). That is our priority. Our Lord affirmed this as “the first and greatest commandment”. He also drew attention that the second is to “love your neighbour as yourself ”.

· “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt 28:19). That is the mission entrusted to us.

We want to see our church as a vibrant place for worship and maturing as a disciple-making church, with multiplication of small groups.
Our vision is to be a church that is clearly committed to multiplying disciples of Christ to impact communities in Singapore and abroad.

Mueller: A Walk of Faith - the musical

We praise and thank God for the response to Yio Chu Kang Chapel's first musical in 35 years! All four shows at the Lee Foundation Theatre were sold out, with a total of over 1,300 people seeing the show.

Audience members were taken on an inspiring musical journey depicting George Mueller's walk of faith -- a walk that in many ways mirrors the journey any Christian must take as one heeds God's call.

If you have seen the musical and would like to share any comments or testimonies, please email admin@yckc.org.sg

Our new Mission Statement

YCKC launched its new Mission Statement on Sunday, 16 Aug 2009 with a bit of fanfare. The lights went off… a short video clip came on… there was a quick reminder of YCK Chapel’s 55 years of existence as a local church, the experience of God’s grace and goodness to us… and our desire to be a blessing to those around us. Without a clear vision, it would not be possible to know where we are going as a church. The past many years, we have been guided by God’s Word and today, we have taken on the task to fine tune the mission further and to make it into a short statement we can remember.

A group of our leaders and ministry leaders have been coming together for the past eight months to embark on an Intentional Disciplemaking Church (IDC) Process. This process will carry on till the middle of next year, and beyond. Along the way, we will be sharing progress reports with our members. There will be changes and adjustments to make, but they will not just be structural changes or more programmes. In all we do, we will want to align ourselves and our activities in the church to the mission God has given to us in this locality.

Our mission:

"To Glorify God by Living the Gospel and Making Disciples to Reach the World for Christ."
