Everyone Needs Forgiveness - Good Friday & Easter Services (note: no Sat Svc on 30 Mar)

The theme for our Good Friday and Easter services this year is Everyone needs Forgiveness’ -- remembering Jesus’ sacrifice for us and celebrating the forgiveness of our sins because of his death and resurrection.

Good Friday Service:
29 March,
10.45am to 12.15pm

Easter Sunday Service:

31 March,
10.45am to 12.15pm

Join us! All are welcome!

(Please note that there is no Saturday Service on 30 March)

“The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.  When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people…

“Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.”  (Acts 13:27-30, 38-39)

A community of Christ's disciples

In the last couple of years, the LORD has faithfully led us as a church in the journey of being an intentional disciplemaking church. We praise Him for granting us so clearly the mission to live the gospel and make disciples to reach the world for Christ.
Living the gospel involves the state of being. It is about who we are. It is about the work of the gospel in our lives. It is about the power of the gospel to transform our inner man so that our life displays the joyful outcome of trusting and obeying Christ.
Making disciples involves action. It is about what we do. It is about the passion of wanting others to experience the saving power of the gospel too. It is about bringing the gospel to the lost, and engaging in life-to-life discipling.
We praise God that He did not call us to be isolated believers. It is His intention that we express our discipleship in a community – the body of Christ. All that happens in the church is to help us fulfil this mission of living the gospel and making disciples. Our pulpit series, mid-size groups, small groups and other platforms, all exist to serve our mission.
Nevertheless, these platforms can become mere activities in the church calendar if members have no ownership to grow as disciples of Christ together. To be a child of God is to become Christ’s disciple. As Pastor David once mentioned in his sermon: Being a Christian means becoming a disciple of Christ; there is no difference between the two. Will you seek to grow as a disciple of Christ in the year 2013? Let us take ownership of our walk with the Lord.
In the coming weeks, we will be using the pulpit to share with you the main thrusts that the church will be having in 2013. They shouldn’t surprise you. Since the Lord has so clearly given us our vision and mission, we will do well to excel and deepen in these specific areas.
We have also prepared an exciting handbook to articulate our desire to grow as an authentic community of Christ’s disciples. A companion guide that goes along with this handbook points us to the platforms available in the church to support us in the areas we desire to grow in. The handbook and its companion guide will be made available next week during our corporate worship gatherings. Remember to collect them!
Finally, we must not be mistaken to think that the center of our existence is Intentional Disciplemaking, or our Mission and Vision Statements. Rather, all these serve the Center of our existence. Jesus Christ is the Center of existence! He is our all in all. May Jesus Christ always be the center of our lives, and this church.  Amen?

Inaugural 'Living' and 'Making' Conference

Learning what it means to live the gospel and make disciples...

We thank and praise God for the good response to the “Living” and “Making” Conference held last Sunday, 22 July. At the morning worship service, guest speaker Ps Jason Lim delivered a simple and powerful message on disciplemaking, entitled ‘A Few Good Men’. After the service, 110 people stayed back for lunch and a time of prayer for the lost, followed by afternoon workshops. At the separate workshops, missionary John Oo shared about world missions in ‘Preaching Christ across the Seas’. Florence Yeow from YCK Gospel Hall shared about ‘Preaching Christ to the seniors and elderly’ and Lau Ying Kheng from Campus Crusade for Christ shared about a lifestyle of evangelism in ‘Preaching Christ with and without words’.

Passing the Baton

The time has come for Pastor David Yap to pass the pastoral leadership baton to Pastor Rick Toh. We are very thankful to the Lord for His guidance. Over the past four years, following Ps David’s expressed desire to complete his term serving on the pastoral staff team, the elders of the church sought the Lord for His choice of a successor. It is with great joy that all the elders were led of the Lord to invite Rick to serve in the pastoral team. Rick was also similarly guided by the Lord. We praise the Lord that He has clearly affirmed to us His choice. Rick has had the opportunity of working closely with David over the past two years. With effect from 1 July 2012, Rick assumes responsibility as Pastor-in-Charge. The elders have asked David to serve as Advisory Pastor. He will be serving in an honorary capacity. David continues serving on the Board of Elders.

Still Building, Still Growing

"For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building." – 1 Corinthians 3:9

More than a year ago, one of our under-shepherds shared 1 Corinthians 3:9 with the others. It was a reminder that our Lord is always working to accomplish His purposes in the church. We are simultaneously God’s field and God’s building and God’s fellow workers. This precious word from the Lord eventually become the theme verse for this year’s church camp, which took place earlier this week.

This camp is an important milestone in YCKC’s “intentional disciple-making church” process. Our journey thus far has already brought about a new mission statement and core values, new ministries and outreach platforms, and new partners in kingdom work. We are as a church conscious that our Chief Shepherd is in the renovation business (Rev 21:5)!

A faithful servant of God and a friend of YCKC, Pastor Daniel Foo, ministered powerfully to nearly 150 of us at the camp.

We worshipped God in Spirit and in truth, with greater fervency than ever before.

Our leaders prayed for the church, and the members in turn prayed for the leaders. Hearts were stirred and challenged, tears were shed, and minds were provoked. Many have returned with joyful testimonies of having encountered the Lord, receiving healing, affirmation or a personal message from Him. In the weeks ahead we will share individual testimonies with the church.

Praise God! What we are seeing is new life being infused into YCKC. It cannot but cause change, growth, transformation – call it what you like. Awe and anticipation are appropriate responses to what God is doing. We know that He already has the blueprint and He is doing the work. In His good time and by His good pleasure, we will become a church befitting the term “bride of Christ”. Each of us should arise to be ready, diligent and faithful partners of God in this adventure. To Him alone be all glory, honour and praise!

2012 - A New Chapter

Dear church,
Beginning a new year is like turning over to a new chapter of an exciting adventure story. There will be challenges, some new, some carried over from previous chapters. Fresh opportunities will be presented… Opportunities to develop and strengthen that which was begun earlier... Opportunities to start anew. It is particularly exciting because God is writing His story, and we are included in this story.

“The LORD saves sinners – the world must listen and respond!” This is our theme for 2012. We resonate with this theme because we have experienced this message. We are sinners saved by God's grace. Each of us can testify of our 'before' and our 'after', just like what several of our fellow members have eloquently shared at our Christmas Service. Some testimonies tell of dramatic turnarounds. Others convey more gradual 'discoveries' of newfound purpose and joy. But all speak of God's loving and continuing work of grace in their lives.

The prophet Isaiah carried this message throughout his life. He went about preaching this important message with urgency. Despite being ignored or rejected, he persevered on, for he knew the message that was entrusted to him was given by the LORD, the Creator, the Sovereign, the only God! And this glorious message brings hope to all who would respond!

We are bearers of this same message. As people who have been touched by God's grace, we have been charged to go and tell. We are God's ambassadors, given that awesome responsibility and privilege to convey this glorious message to the world around us.

We will be studying the Book of Isaiah. As we work our way through this Book over two years (2012 & 2013), we will hear clearly the LORD’s heartbeat and respond as people placed to fulfill His purpose in this generation. The theme verse we have chosen for this year captures this thought succinctly:
“Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.” (Isaiah 45:22)

We will also be having special emphases Sundays, where we will consider together issues relating to discipleship, missions and evangelism, family life, and the church. And, through our mid-sized groups (i.e. Children’s Ministry, Youth, Young Adults, Palm Green, Indonesian Fellowship, Filipino Fellowship, Tamil Fellowship and PRC outreach Ministry) and small groups, there will be active engagement in outreach and discipleship.

It is exciting to be on this adventure with God. The next chapter is being written, with you and I featured in that story, being molded and at the same time given opportunities by our LORD to fulfill His glorious purpose. What a grand privilege! Thank you Lord.

May 2012 be a year where we in YCKC grow in knowing and serving the LORD, actively listening and obeying Him. Only then will that urgent and important message be relayed with conviction to the world around us.

With God’s blessings,

David LT Yap
Lead Pastor & Elder

YCKC's 57th Anniversary - Remembering God's Agenda for the World

It was in 1954 when several believers living in the Serangoon and Yio Chu Kang vicinity gathered at 140 Yio Chu Kang Road to break bread together. This was Yio Chu Kang Chapel’s humble beginning.

Today, we celebrate our 57th anniversary, grateful to the Lord for calling us, establishing us as a local church and commissioning us to fulfil His purpose.

On this special occasion, it is good for us to ponder over this question: what is God’s agenda for the world and how is it relevant to us in this local church?

God has an agenda for the world

Indeed, God has an agenda for the world, a plan that He has put in place. This is expressed so clearly in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” In a nutshell, God’s agenda is given in the glorious gospel. This is the message that everyone must hear.

This was the message that Paul preached passionately to Jews and Gentiles (for a concise record of his sermon, refer to Acts 13:16-49) declaring that God’s plans are fulfilled in the risen Christ. Through Jesus, the forgiveness of sins is promised. Through Him, everyone who believes is justified. What glorious good news for all!

God pursues His agenda

Recently, Dane Ortlund, Senior Editor of the Bible Division at Crossway Books invited a group of theologians and Bible scholars to summarise the message of the Bible in one sentence. The following is an interesting sample:

God has made promises to bring His people to Himself and He is fulfilling them all through Christ. (Mark Dever)

Jesus is the promised Savior-King.(David Helm)

God is redeeming His creation by bringing it under the lordship of Jesus Christ. (Kent Hughes)

God, who made us and everything else, loves us and gave Himself for us that we might live forever with Him as new creatures in a new creation—the news is good! (Phil Long)

The message of the Bible is the transforming grace of God displayed preeminently in Jesus Christ. (Sean Lucas)

The Lover of our souls won’t let the romance die, but is rekindling it forever.(Ray Ortlund)

These one sentence summaries of the Bible message indeed bring to our attention that the loving God relentlessly pursues His agenda. And we are beneficiaries. We can testify of God’s redeeming grace and the blessedness of being His people.

This gospel is bearing fruit and growing

As I reflect on God’s agenda, our theme verse for this year comes to mind:
“All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth” (Col 1:6).

Each of us is a fruit of this gospel message. We have received the good news, and have come to Jesus, acknowledging Him as Saviour and Lord.
And amazingly, as He has called us to Himself, He has also given us the privilege of joining Him in His work.

We can never fully fathom all that God is doing throughout the world and through the ages. But we do know that our purposeful God who caused this church to be established 57 years ago desires us to be involved in His glorious gospel work.

Prior to the church being established, in 1953, Mr and Mrs Cook from Canada were busily moving about the Chia Keng Village, gathering children and all who would hear, to tell them the gospel of Jesus Christ. The faithful witnessing of this couple gradually led to a group of believers coming together for worship as a congregation and to use that location as a base for witness in this vicinity. The work has grown through the past decades.

Today, as we mark our 57th anniversary, we look back with thanksgiving to the Lord and look forward with expectations mindful of our calling as a church. This is captured in our mission statement. We exist to glorify God by living the gospel and making disciples to reach the world for Christ.

May we be true to the mission that the Lord of the church has entrusted to us.

Let's pray for our nation Singapore

"I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight
of God our Saviour"
(1 Timothy 2:1-3, KJV).

We are commanded to pray for our nation. Yes, this is not a suggestion but a command.

Prayer is how we communicate with God and participate in His works. It enables us to tap into God’s power. At the same time, it is a great privilege to experience God through prayer, committing people and circumstances to Him and seeing Him work out His purpose. Christians are called to offer supplications, prayers and intercessions. We know that we are citizens of two kingdoms – the spiritual kingdom of God and the physical kingdom of earth. The Bible brings to our attention that we need to be good citizens of both kingdoms.

As Singapore observes our 46th National Day, it is right that we take this occasion to remind all of us that we have the responsibility to pray for our nation.

Pray for our national leaders in Singapore

Let’s pray for our government. One of the fundamental functions of any government is to provide public order.

A government that cannot enforce the rule of law over its citizens will be lame. This is the underlying reason that Paul exhorted us to be subject to those entrusted with the responsibility to lead the nation. Yes, we believe that the authorities that exist have been established by God to promote order (Rom 13:1). Let’s pray for the lawmakers in our land. May the laws that are passed be just, to benefit the majority and not only a selected few. Let’s pray for the Prime Minister and the Cabinet – that they may be leaders with integrity and wisdom, even as they steer the nation through turbulent times and seek to provide equal opportunities to every citizen. Our government has expressed the need to identify a new generation of younger leaders to be groomed to succeed the older leaders. Pray that this process will be successful as capable and upright men and women are identified and step forth to serve society. Let’s pray for those who judge, that they may bring justice swiftly, and that all matters under their judgment will examined carefully and fairly. Let’s pray for continued freedom to worship and assemble, for an environment where the good news of Jesus Christ can be freely proclaimed.

Prayer for Singapore's society

We read the papers and note the sad decline of moral values in our society. We have become very materialistic. The major focus of many in society appears to be on climbing up the social and economic ladder in order to accumulate more. At the same time, we hear of sad accounts of family break-ups, addictions, violence and sexual immorality. Let’s pray that we do not become a society with no fear of God. May the above idols be removed, and may people come to know the Living God. Let’s uphold the family institution in prayer. God designed the family to be a place of love and support, a safe place to grow and enjoy the warmth of familial ties. The family institution is under attack. Ask the Lord to bring peace, guidance and healing to families, and that His people will have opportunities to help strengthen family life in our nation. Let’s pray for the youths in our society today. Each day they are bombarded with conflicting moral standards and violence, through various media channels. In the midst of this turmoil, God is raising up young people like the Bible characters Joseph, Joshua and Timothy – people who fear God and desire to please Him in their lives. Ask the Lord to make them bold and steadfast in their faith.

Pray for the Church in Singapore

We need to pray for ourselves, the church in Singapore.
Pray that God’s people will stand strong in our convictions, be bold and faithful witnesses and indeed be mindful that we are to be salt and light in our society. We pray that the church in Singapore will grow with clear evidence of faithful reliance on the Word of God and guided by the Spirit of God. May the church in Singapore be God’s instrument to bless our nation, and also nations that the Lord wants us to reach. The church is called to pray. We stand in the gap for our nation and nations of the world. The people of God have been commanded to intercede. We have the wonderful privilege and opportunity of partnering in God’s Kingdom work through prayer. Indeed, He promises to respond when His people humble themselves, turn from their wicked ways and pray. Turning from our wicked ways include turning from our unbelief and ungodliness.

Church, we have been commanded to pray for our nation. Let us not neglect this important and privileged responsibility.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Kingdom of the Son 'prayer safari' - a wonderful time at Vacation Bible School!

Jambo! It means "Hello" in Swahili.
"Jambo" was one of the many songs that 76 children learnt to sing at the recent Vacation Bible School for children from ages 5-8 that was held from 31 May – 3 June 2011. At the VBS, the children went through a safari (Swahili for “journey”) and were taught, through Bible story-telling, music and songs, as well as crafts and games, that – God listens, God provides, God forgives and God protects. Over four days, the children and teachers were led by the Lord through a time of spiritual bonding and great learning. Ask the young ones who participated to sing the Lord's Prayer! They even know and can show you the sign language for it!

Making disciples – bearing fruit and growing

Making disciples – bearing fruit and growing

"All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth". (Col 1:6)

Dear Church,
The Lord wants us to hear this message clearly: the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ, is bearing fruit all over the world and advancing, and He wants us to join in His mission!
This was the message Paul joyously declared when he wrote to the church in Colossae. Today, the truth of this message continues to unfold before us.

The gospel is for everyone
“All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit". Paul was writing to a church made up of mainly Gentile believers. He was at the same time aware that there were many Jewish believers who have embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ, as the gospel was spreading through the then known world. Everywhere the gospel was preached, there was response – in certain cases rejection, and in certain cases welcome. The gospel message was not bound by geography, race, gender, nationality or politics. It was certainly not restricted to only a certain class of people. The gospel is good news to anyone who will receive it.

The gospel is powerful
This gospel is “bearing fruit and growing”. It is not just a catchy phrase. It’s about life change. It is about transformation that brings about right living before God. It is “the power of God for salvation” (Rom 1:16). It is the powerful Word of God that will not come back empty without accomplishing His purpose (Isa 55:11). The gospel is active and dynamic.

The gospel is about God’s grace
The Colossian believers were people who experienced the wonders of God’s amazing grace. They received the gospel message. It impacted them. Their lives had been changed when they received what God freely and graciously provided. This is grace. The gospel is the message of God’s gift to undeserving people. It is the good news of God’s grace.

The gospel must be shared
Epaphras faithfully shared the good news with the Colossians. In turn, the Colossian believers, as beneficiaries, had the responsibility to live out the gospel and relay the good news. It’s a sobering responsibility. But this is God’s way. He could have used another more effective way. But God chose to use people who have received His grace to tell others. Paul drew our attention to the fact that God has given us “the ministry of reconciliation” (2 Cor 5:18). We are ministers, servants, entrusted with the responsibility to tell people this good news that God’s grace is available.
God will cause the gospel to bear fruit and to advance. Amazingly, He invites us, people who have experienced His grace, to be involved in His mission. What a privilege! What an awesome responsibility!
Our Lord Jesus therefore gave this solemn charge to all His beloved disciples, to “go and make disciples” (Matt 28:18-20). This is the call to the church to be engaged in the Lord’s gospel work, the gospel in the full sense of the word.

Church, let’s hear the call to make disciples. That’s our Lord's design for the good news of the hope of restoration to be brought to the world.

In 2011:

Hear the message to Jonah, and understand God's heartbeat.

Hear the message to Joel, and take hold of the Lord's promise.

Hear the message to the Colossians, and have an appreciation of the gospel's transforming power.

YCKC, the Lord has placed us here to exhort one another, to be accountable to each other in the Body of Christ, to have opportunities to minister together. The mandate is clear, the task is great, the outcome will be glorious, for the Lord will accomplish His purpose. We have the privilege of involvement in the Lord’s mission, and will have the joy of seeing the gospel bearing fruit and growing.

May this new year be one that is fruitful, the result of disciples going out faithfully to “make disciples” as our Lord has so commissioned us.

The greatest gift you could ever receive

What is the greatest gift you could ever receive?

Every Christmas, shops are packed with people hunting for presents for family, friends and colleagues. And whether young or old, we all look forward to receiving gifts.

But year after year, we soon discover how hard it is to be truly satisfied. There's always something more that we wish we could have, and Christmas presents only satisfy us for a little while. Maybe we wish we could have a sense of peace. Maybe we're looking for a purpose in life. Maybe we're looking for forgiveness, but don't know where to find it. Maybe we want to change, but don't know how. Maybe we just want to be loved.

God knows our deepest needs, even more than we do. He loves us, even more than we could imagine. Because of that, He has offered us the greatest gift we could ever receive. He has offered us a good relationship with Him.

How? By taking away the barrier of sin -- all the evil, selfish things we have done or thought. How did He do that? He paid the penalty of sin for us, by coming to us as Jesus, and offering Himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus is the greatest gift God offers to us. Through Him, we can have peace, purpose, forgiveness, transformation and love. Through Him, we do not need to pay the price for our sins -- a price we could never truly pay through our own efforts. Because of his loving sacrifice, we do not need to face eternal punishment. Instead, we can have eternal life in heaven. God wants you to receive His greatest gift. You just have to acknowledge that you need Jesus.

Our 56th Anniversary - Looking forward

YCK Chapel celebrated its 56th anniversary on Sunday, 3 October 2010.

Even as we look back on God's guidance and blessings over the years, we look forward to fulfilling His desire for us as a church in the years to come.

As we look ahead, we hear these declarations of the Lord Jesus afresh:

· “I will build my church” (Matt 16:18). That is the Lord’s promise. We know that He has been building and we can be confident that He will continue building.

· “Love the Lord your God with all your heart …” (Matt 22:37). That is our priority. Our Lord affirmed this as “the first and greatest commandment”. He also drew attention that the second is to “love your neighbour as yourself ”.

· “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matt 28:19). That is the mission entrusted to us.

We want to see our church as a vibrant place for worship and maturing as a disciple-making church, with multiplication of small groups.
Our vision is to be a church that is clearly committed to multiplying disciples of Christ to impact communities in Singapore and abroad.
